According to Sam “...it was one of the most mind-bending and disturbing moments of Covid or indeed my life. From the moment I logged into the live-stream and witnessed the rest of my family gathered in the crematorium, only able to view the backs of their masked heads, I understood why remote-funerals might never catch on. There was no-one to hold, no-one to comfort or be comforted by and no-one to share tears with. My final moments with my last grandparent unfolded on my laptop—a device I use for sending emails, recording saxophone, and teaching.
When the funeral had finished and my family had left the crematorium, I remained behind, alone, with the power to conclude my Grandfather’s story, at the tip of my finger.”
The creative process behind this single was truly one-of-a-kind. With thoughts of his grandfather's funeral, Sam composed, arranged, and recorded the piece all at once, drawing inspiration solely from his ears and his passion for baroque and classical music. Utilising Logic X, he added layers to shape the song, continuously refining it without any formal notation. This natural and theory-free approach resulted in a heartfelt and authentic musical creation that seems to emanate directly from the soul.
Sam's remarkable 3.5 octave vocal range is on full display as the song spans from deep bass tones to soaring falsetto melody lines. He also blended soprano and tenor saxophones to enhance the sonic textures. After crafting the initial demo, Sam brought it to the studio where the band contributed additional pre-arranged layers, deepening the composition's complexity. During the final editing phase, he re-recorded the vocals to achieve broadcast quality and fine-tuned the band's arrangement to achieve his envisioned rendition of the song.
